A gothic stone fortress that housed prisoners from 1876 to 1995, now open for tours and paranormal investigations.
The West Virginia State Penitentiary operated for 129 years as one of America's most notorious prisons. Its grey sandstone walls, built by hand from local stone, enclose cellblocks, the sugar hole, and the site of the electric chair. Today visitors walk the same halls on daytime history tours and after-dark ghost hunts.
